Medtronic has led a $37 million oversubscribed Series C funding round for CoreMap, a medical technology company focused on atrial fibrillation. The US-based firm, established in 2016 and headquartered in Burlington, Massachusetts, aims to use the capital to develop more precise, data-driven tools for treating the heart condition. This investment marks a significant step forward for the company’s efforts to improve how doctors diagnose and treat irregular heartbeats.
CoreMap will direct the new funds toward its electrophysiology mapping system. The technology is designed to give physicians detailed guidance during atrial fibrillation (AF) ablation procedures. These procedures target heart tissue to create tiny scars using radiofrequency or pulsed field energy, effectively blocking the faulty electrical signals causing the irregular rhythm.
The company’s system relies on large data sets of highly accurate electrical activation data to assist clinical decision-making. By analyzing this information, the software provides a clearer picture of the heart’s electrical setting during surgery. This helps clinicians target the precise areas of tissue that need treatment, potentially reducing the time required for procedures and improving outcomes for patients.
Accelerating AF Ablation Guidance
CEO and co-founder Sarah Kalil noted that atrial fibrillation remains a difficult challenge in electrophysiology. She emphasized that doctors currently lack sufficient data to make some treatment choices. “Physicians need better data to guide treatment decisions and improve patient outcomes,” Kalil said. “This investment provides the resources to accelerate CoreMap’s next-generation AF mapping platform’s time to market.”

Chris Eso, the global head of corporate and business development at Medtronic, highlighted that the company is addressing a critical unmet need in AF treatment. He described CoreMap’s technology as a differentiated platform with strong clinical support. “We are excited to support Sarah and the CoreMap team as they advance the company through its next stage of growth,” Eso stated.
Regional Growth in Medical Technology
The funding round included participation from both existing and new investors. The capital injection will allow CoreMap to scale its operations and bring its mapping technology to a broader market. The collaboration between CoreMap and Medtronic brings together specialized expertise in cardiac care and digital health analytics.
Medtronic has been expanding its portfolio of digital and analytic solutions for cardiac ablation. Recent discussions with internal leaders have focused on how the region is building depth not just in hardware, but in software and data analysis. This broader trend toward software-defined medical devices mirrors the evolution of other high-tech industries.
